42 operators across 27 countries are now investing in 5G RedCap globally. EE and Vodafone are live in the UK. Three is testing. O2 and VMO2 are building the SA infrastructure that RedCap requires. Here is where things stand.

The March 2026 analysis covered the full picture – operator strategy, the eRedCap roadmap, and how the UK compares with Germany and the Netherlands. This update covers what has moved since then and what the current state of the market looks like in May 2026.

Global: 42 operators, 27 countries

The GSA April 2026 report puts the number of operators investing in 5G RedCap at 42 across 27 countries – up from 34 in 24 countries at the September 2025 count. The UK is explicitly named as one of the countries where operators are in active testing. A significant proportion of the global investment remains in the trial phase, with commercial launches concentrated in the most advanced markets.

Since September 2025, the operators that have moved to commercial launch include Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom in Germany, SoftBank in Japan, M1 in Singapore, MasOrange in Spain, and Etisalat (e&) in the UAE. Germany’s dual commercial launch – both Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom – confirms it as the leading European market for RedCap, driven by industrial IoT demand from automotive and manufacturing.

EE Live

Broadest 5G SA footprint in the UK. RedCap commercially live. Most likely first to volume enterprise deployments.

Three Testing

Active testing confirmed. Smallest 5G SA footprint of the four UK MNOs. RedCap commercial launch expected in 2026.

O2 / VMO2 SA In Progress

5G SA buildout accelerating. Strong enterprise IoT relationships provide commercial pressure to follow EE and Vodafone. Post-consolidation network scale gives VMO2 significant resources to close the gap.

The position of the UK within GSA’s global picture is instructive. The UK is listed among the active testing countries – the same tier as Finland, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia – not yet in the commercial launch group. That is consistent with EE and Vodafone being live but the overall market not yet at the commercial scale that would shift the UK into the deployed column globally.

Module pricing: the direction of travel

Early RedCap modules are currently priced at $30 to $50 per unit – still at a premium over equivalent LTE Cat-4 hardware. That gap is narrowing. With production volumes scaling through 2026, module prices are expected to reach $15 to $25 by late 2026. At that level, the cost differential over Cat-4 becomes marginal when weighed against 5G network longevity. For IoT buyers specifying hardware today for multi-year deployments, the pricing trajectory matters as much as the current price point. eRedCap: chipsets arriving

The eRedCap explainer covers the Release 18 specification in full. The short version for this update: first eRedCap chipsets are entering the market through 2026, with module availability in 2027 and volume production from 2027-2028. The same 5G SA infrastructure that EE and Vodafone have deployed for Release 17 RedCap supports eRedCap without additional network investment. When eRedCap modules arrive at scale, the UK network will be ready for them.

The UK’s position in May 2026 is unchanged from March in terms of the operator table, but the global context has strengthened. More operators live, more countries testing, module pricing moving in the right direction. The trajectory is consistent – 2026 is the year commercial foundations are laid, 2027 is when volume enterprise deployment becomes a realistic conversation for UK IoT buyers.

Private 5G: where UK RedCap is moving fastest

Public network RedCap coverage outside major urban centres is a 2026-2028 story. Private 5G networks – where you control the core and can deploy SA from day one regardless of public network status – sidestep this constraint entirely. This is where the most immediate UK RedCap commercial activity is happening, and where Teltonika’s RUT271 and comparable hardware is being evaluated now.
